What to Expect When Visiting Spata, Attica, Greece

Itinerary

Day 1: Travel to Olympus mountain – Hike to Petrostrougka refuge hut

Stop At: Olympus National Park, Litochoro 60200 Greece
Flight to Athens or to Thessaloniki. From here we drive towards Litohoro located right at the foothills of Olympus mountain. We start at 1110m, and after a 3-hour hike in a pleasant rich forest trail of pine and fir trees until we reach our destination for the day the Petrostrouga Hut. We will enjoy a stunning view at the Aegean sea and the high summits while the tour leaders gives a briefing of the next days program. We will have a meal and overnight stay at the hut.

Day 2: Hike to Muses plateau – Tumba peak – Sleep at refuge house

Stop At: Olympus National Park, Litochoro 60200 Greece
The day starts early as we need to depart by 09.00 towards the Muses plateau, named after the inspirational goddesses of literature, science, and the arts. During this 4-5 hour stunning hike we will see how the mountain’s ecosystem transforms, from dense forest to alpine terrain, as we head towards higher altitudes. A small but friendly refuge will accommodate us where we will have a 2 hour break to get acquainted with the space, get a warm tea, or socialise with local climbers.

After lunch and relaxing time, we will hike the nearby peaks – named Profitis Ilias at an altitude of 2.781m and the close by peak of Tumba at 2.786m – just above our refuge to admire superb views of Mt Olympus summits. A breath taking view of the Aegean Sea while the sun is setting is the perfect closure of our hikes. Upon our return to the refuge a well deserved dinner and a drink are all we need to complete the day.

Day 3: Descent the mountain – Transfer to Meteora.

Stop At: Olympus National Park, Litochoro 60200 Greece
Today after breakfast, is the summit day. In order to reach Mytikas we will have to use our hands (rock scramble). At the top of Mytikas (2918m) you will see one of the most magnificent views in Greece. On a clear day, you are able to see as far as Albania and Bulgaria in the North, and Chalkidiki penisulla. As reaching the summit is challenging and the safety of our clients always comes first, our guides retain the decision if clients are to actually climb the peak of Mytikas.

We will descent the mountain taking a different trail this time. Afterwards we drive towards Meteora for overnight there and if we are on time we will go for a perfect sunset view.

Day 4: Meteora – Return to Athens.

Stop At: Meteora, Meteora, Trikala Region, Thessaly
Meteora, famous all over the world for its gigantic rock pillars and monasteries that are built on the rocks’ summits, a unique worldwide UNESCO monument. Meteora is one of the largest Greek Orthodox communities in Greece, one of the most imposing sights in Greece and a must-see for everyone visiting the country.

Today we have one more challenge on the rocks. We are going to explore this magnificent scenery from the best ever viewpoints following a magnificent via cordata route. The route we will follow, it is an ancient path curved by the monks in the Middle Ages who lived in the ruined monastery. It is a scramble walk that leads to one of the highest rocks of Meteora where you will enjoy breathtaking views from the top. Late at noon we will drive towards Athens to finish our excursion.
