Stop At: Vlychada Beach, Vlychada Greece

Vlychada stands out for the overwhelming carved cliffs that resemble a sculptor’s work but is, in fact, a natural process owed to the volcano, the wind and the sea. It is a lengthy beach with relatively shallow waters and dark volcanic sand and pebbles, like most beaches in Santorini. Vlychada Beach is worthy for the without parallel lunar landscape that enchants all visitors and is unique among the beaches in Santorini. It is, in fact, the most atmospheric beach you can find in the whole island.

The “Heart of Santorini” is one of Santorini’s best kept secrets. This spot is where there is a heart carved naturally into the side of the caldera, giving a stunning view of the volcano and only steps from the Chapel of Agios Nikoloas. It is in the Megalochlori area of Santorini

Megalochori is one of the most picturesque villages on the island. Its existence is recorded back to the 17th century.Home to historical mansions, old traditional houses, pirate hideaways and wine canavas, it has a history of merchants and wealthy land barons exporting Vinsanto wine that the island still produces. A prominent feature of the historical homes and mansions are the high walls, inner courtyards and solid wooden door entrances, built for privacy and for safety against marauding pirates.A great effort is been made by local residents and businessmen to preserve the characteristics and beauty of this traditional settlement, and many of the original houses that had fallen into disrepair, have been restored to their former glory.

The village of Emporio is the largest settlement of Santorini and is located 12 km from Fira, on the foothills of Mount Prophet Elias.
The village itself has a strong medieval character and most of the houses have been well-preserved. Two lovely blue-domed churches with impressive bell towers stand at the entrance of the village.

Half way up, one can find the 15th century fortress which looks as will slide down the hill at any moment. To the east of the town you will see the market and some nice hotels leading to the well-known Perissa beach.
