he Koules Castle is a massive fortress with two storeys that used to guard the entry to the port. The Castle was constructed by the Venetians in the early 13th century when they conquered the town. The earliest description of the Koules Venetian Castle exists in the work of the Florentine monk Cristoforo Buondelmonti in 1429.
The Venetian harbour of Heraklion is at the end of 25th of August Street, the pedestrian street leading from the town centre to the Koules fortress. This is the old harbour of Heraklion, now used by fishing boats and yachts, and its history is as ancient as that of the city itself.
The Heraklion Markets, known as the Central Market, are a thriving and busy centre in the middle of Heraklion, Crete. “Heraklion Markets” refers to the city’s several marketplaces and retail locations, each offering a distinct experience. The central market complex is an essential element of the cultural and gastronomic character of the city.
Agios Minas is the patron saint of Heraklion, Crete, and his memory is celebrated on November 11, a public holiday in Heraklion. He was established as the patron saint of Heraklion during the Turkish occupation. Tradition tells us that on Easter 1826, while the Christians were gathered in the temple and watching the Resurrection service, a mob of Muslims was preparing a massacre against them, which was prevented by the intervention of an old cavalry officer.
This horseman looked like the first lad of the Turks, Ayan Aga, who calmed them down and prevented them from massacring the Christians. The Christians attributed this intervention of the mysterious horseman to a miracle of Saint Minas, believing that he was the one who presented himself to the Turks and not Ayan Agas.
