Aradena is one of the most interesting and longest gorges (15 km) in the region. The old Sfakians called it Faragas (Huge gorge) due to its size, distinguishing it from the other gorges of Sfakia. This characterization was later mistakenly applied to the Samaria Gorge. The gorge actually starts from the root of the peak Thodoris of the White Mountains, specifically from the underground stream of cave Drakolakki. However, most people think it is only 7 km long because the easiest access is from Aradena village, located at the middle of the gorge.
