Itinerary
This is a typical itinerary for this product
Stop At: Astypalaia Castle, Chora Greece
A path between white small houses will lead us to the main entrance of the Venetian castle. During the route we will make several stops (Megali Panagia, Aegean Balcony) to admire the architecture of the houses and their wonderful sea views, while we will hear stories and interesting information about the island of Astypalea over the years. The historical, social, cultural events of the island and its inhabitants are imprinted on it for centuries.
Short stop at the church of Panagia Portaitissa with the unique ecclesiastical architecture that combines orthodox and catholic decoration. Her icon is an exact copy of the icon of the Virgin Mary in the Monastery of Iveron on Mount Athos.
Just before entering the central square of Chora and after getting to know the neighborhoods of the traditional settlement, we will visit the infant cemetery of the 7th century BC, a unique archaeological find in the world.
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
Stop At: Maltezana Beach, Analipsi 85900 Greece
We will meet the fishing village of Astypalea, the beautiful and windless bay. Its naturally protected port for centuries was the base of the Maltese pirates, hence the place name Maltezana. There, in the bay of Kareklis, stands the monument of the French Admiral Bisson to remind us of the years of the pirates. The Baths of Talaras and the mosaic zodiac, along with a reference to the two basilicas of Kareklis and Agia Varvara, will remind us of the glorious and prosperous past of the settlement. Then we will meet the fishing dock with its boats and the foundations of the coastal houses that in 1956 were demolished by the tsunami. Stories of the settlement will come to tie our tour and take us for a while to its rich past.
