The monastery, known as Lady of the Angels Monastery of Gonia, earns its name from its strategic position at the western corner of Chania Bay.

Established in the 17th century, the monastery quickly became a hub of religious activity, fostering a rich monastic tradition.

Throughout history, Gonia Monastery played a pivotal role, serving as a sanctuary for Cretan rebels and enduring repeated destruction by various conquerors.

Enclosed within imposing walls reminiscent of a Venetian fortress, the complex centers around the temple dedicated to the Virgin Hodhegetria, celebrated on August 15th. Additionally, the monastery boasts numerous auxiliary buildings such as monk cells, an abbey, dining quarters, storage facilities. Notably, it is also home to the Orthodox Academy of Crete.

Distinguished individuals have held the position of monastery abbot, including Misael Apostolidis, renowned as the Greek language tutor to King Otto and the inaugural rector of the University of Athens.

Located just south of Cape Tigani and 17 kilometers west of Kissamos, Falasarna boasts five consecutive sandy beaches, with the largest and most famous being Pachia Ammos. Along its northern side lies ancient Falasarna, once a prominent city during the Hellenistic era and steeped in historical significance.

Legend has it that the beach derives its name from the nymph Falasarni, adding a touch of mystique to its allure.
