It was intended as male monastery when it was founded in the 16th century, However, during many centuries Crete struggled with occupations and conquests, the monastery suffered as well and was finally destroyed in 1821 during the Revolution. In 1976, the first three nuns of today’s fraternity returned to the monastery to rebuild it and restore all the historical heirlooms.
