Itinerary

Stop At: Parthenon, Acropolis Top of Dionyssiou Areopagitou, Athens 105 58 Greece

Athens’ premier attraction is also its most crowded. That’s why this tour uses skip the line tickets and a specially-timed itinerary to ensure you are among the first people to see the Parthenon when it opens in the morning.

Your tour starts at 7:30 when your local expert guide meets you and your small group of no more than 15 people near the Acropolis to make sure you are among the first through the gates. While most groups visit the various temples and monuments as they walk up the hill, you’ll march straight to the Parthenon, one of the most famous and influential buildings in history. As you stand in its shadow with virtually no one else around, your guide will tell you its millennia-spanning story and reveal some of its secrets, including why it can never be replicated.

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Pass By: Acropolis, Via Dionysiou Areopagitou Str., Athens 105 58 Greece

Just when the crowds begin to arrive, you’ll head over to the other attractions on the Acropolis, including the Erechtheon, the legendary temple where the Athena and the sea god Poseidon competed to become the patrons of the city, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Theater of Dionysus (the oldest theater in the world) and the theater of Herodes Atticus. You’ll also enjoy stunning views over the Greek Agora, which was once the civic center of the ancient city.

Stop At: Acropolis Museum, Dionysiou Areopagitou 15, Athens 117 42 Greece

If the Acropolis Museum option is chosen, you’ll head down the hill and once again use skip the line tickets to enter the New Acropolis Museum, where all the artistic treasures that once adorned the Acropolis are now kept. Before your museum tour even begins you’ll discover the ruins of an ancient Athenian neighborhood at the ‘Makrygianni plot’ – a spectacular underground excavation site below the museum which offers a glimpse into life in 3500 and 3000 BC. Inside the museum on the first floor you’ll see the treasure trove of statues that represent the triumph of civilization over barbarism, but the highlights are still to come. First are the Caryatids, enormous statues of women what once supported the entablature of the Erechtheon (the ones you saw on the actual temple are recreations). Then you’ll see the famous Parthenon Marbles, which depict a mythic battle, and learn about the very real battle that still surrounds their ownership and exhibition.
