It is known for the important archive it maintains. The monastery was organized by the brothers Nektarios and Theophanis, the so-called Apsarades, from Epirus at the beginning of the 16th century. In 1518 they renovated the chapel of the Three Hierarchs, which had been built by Barlaam. In 1536 the tower of the brizon was built. The monastery experienced economic growth and spiritual flourishing.

The monastery stands out because of its design, which was adapted to the small plateau on which it is built, with successive floors. On the lower floor of the monastery is the chapel of Agios Antonios, from the 14th century with traces of hagiographies, and a crypt. On the second floor is the catholicon and on the top floor is the manor house (formerly a bank), the ossuary and the chapel of Agios Ioannis Prodromos
