What makes Private Tour to Meteora and Thermopylae a unique experience ?
The Leonidas Monument commemorates the battle in 480 BC in which a small band of about 300 Spartan soldiers held off a huge Persian army for three days.
Battlefield of Thermopylae is the land surface on which the famous battle was fought in 480 BC.Where the Spartans made their last stand with the body of their King Leonidas against Xerxes and his Persian army.
Thermopylae can be translated as ‘Hot Gates’, a reference to the volcanic hot springs near this Greek town. Directly opposite the monument of Leonidas of Sparta is a volcanic area with several of sulfur hot springs. According to the Ancient Greeks, these springs were believed to be a gateway to the Underworld (Hades). It is further mentioned in Ancient Greek Mythology as the place where the Greek hero Heracles washed off the poison from his legendary battle with the Hydra, thus turning the waters into hot springs.
The Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior, also known as Megalo Meteoro, is a men’s monastery located at the highest point of Meteora, at an altitude of 534 meters. It is the largest of the six that continue to be active in Meteora, which since 1988 has been included in the UNESCO world heritage sites. It was founded in the 14th century by Saint Athanasios of Meteora and experienced particular prosperity in the middle of the 16th century. The monastery is located at the top of the Platys Lithos hill and is accessed via a ladder.
The monastery was created at the beginning of the 16th century, but it was named after the ascetic Barlaam, who settled on the rock in the 14th century. It is known for the important archive it maintains. The monastery was organized by the brothers Nektarios and Theophanis, the so-called Apsarades, from Epirus at the beginning of the 16th century. In 1518 they renovated the chapel of the Three Hierarchs, which had been built by Barlaam. In 1536 the tower of the brizon was built. The monastery experienced economic growth and spiritual flourishing.
The monastery stands out because of its design, which was adapted to the small plateau on which it is built, with successive floors. On the lower floor of the monastery is the chapel of Agios Antonios, from the 14th century with traces of hagiographies, and a crypt. On the second floor is the catholicon and on the top floor is the manor house (formerly a bank), the ossuary and the chapel of Agios Ioannis Prodromos
Small paths, picturesque streets, small chapels make up the scenery and all this under the shadow of the “Holy Rocks”. In fact, the village has been declared, together with the entire area of Meteora, a Natural Monument and World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO and is a popular starting point for visitors who arrive there.
