The Archaeological Museum of Mycenae is located in the northern part of the Acropolis of Mycenae, located within the archaeological site. The collection reveals various aspects of the everyday life of the Mycenaeans, as well as their beliefs about the afterlife and death. The Museum offers valuable insights into the remarkable achievements of the Mycenaean civilization that forever shaped and determined the ancient Greek world.
Located in eastern Peloponnese, the archaeological site of Mycenae is among the most important places in mainland Greece. Mycenae was the most powerful town of its days and even gave its name to an entire historical period, the Mycenaean period. The Mycenaean civilization dates from 1,600 BC to 1,100 BC approximately, reaching its peak between 1,400 BC and 1,200 BC. History testifies that the Mycenaeans were great warriors and followed a severe social scale, with the king on top. They did not develop the arts much and there are no recorded facts of extensive trade between Mycenae and other city-states, although Mycenaean pots have been found in the Mediterranean basin, most in southern Italy and even in Egypt.
The Treasury of Atreus or Tomb of Agamemnon is a large tholos or beehive tomb constructed between 1300 and 1250 BCE in Mycenae. The Treasury was most likely built as the tomb for the aristocracy of Mycenae, although the exact person (or people) buried there cannot be verified. Both Atreus and Agamemnon have been identified with the tomb, as they were both legendary Mycenean kings
The Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus is a theatre in the Greek city of Epidaurus, located on the southeast end of the sanctuary dedicated to the ancient Greek God of medicine, Asclepius. Constructed in late 4th century BC,it is considered to be the most perfect ancient Greek theatre with regard to acoustics and aesthetics. Because of its exceptional architecture and aesthetics, the theatre was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988 along with the Temple of Asclepius.
The Archaeological Museum of Epidaurus, one of the oldest museums of ancient Greek architecture, houses a large collection with many important finds discovered after many years of excavations in the Sanctuary of Asklepios (1881-1928). The excavations were conducted by the archaeologist Panagis Kavvadias and the Archaeological Society of Athens bringing to light finds that date back to the period spanning from the Archaic era until the Roman times.
The Sanctuary of Asklepios at Epidaurus is a remarkable testament to the healing cults of the Ancient World and witness to the emergence of scientific medicine. Situated in the Peloponnese, in the Regional unit of Argolis, the site comprises a series of ancient monuments spread over two terraces and surrounded by a preserved natural landscape.
The fort of the Palamidi, which has been preserved in excellent condition, is one of the greatest achievements of Venetian fortification architecture. The hill at which the castle is located was named after Palamidis, the hero of Homer’s Epics. It is said that, in 1686, the Venetian Commander-in-Chief Morosini envisioned the construction of the castle, whose architectural design was undertaken by governor Grimani. In 1715, just one year after its completion, it was occupied by the Turks and just one century later it finally came to the possession of the Greeks.
One of the most beautiful towns in the area of Argolis (in eastern Peloponnese) as well as one of the most romantic cities all over Greece, Nafplio was the first capital of the newly born Greek state between 1823 and 1834. According to mythology, the town was founded by Nafplios, the son of god Poseidon and the daughter of Danaus (Danaida) Anymone. The town’s history traces back to the prehistoric era when soldiers from here participated in the Argonautic expedition and the Trojan War alike. The town declined during the Roman times and flourished again during the Byzantine times. Frankish, Venetian and Turkish conquerors left their mark in the town and strongly influenced its culture, architecture and traditions during the centuries. Ancient walls, medieval castles, monuments and statues, Ottoman fountains and Venetian or neoclassical buildings mesmerize the visitor with their unique architecture and beauty.
