The Monastery of St. Varlaam is an Eastern Orthodox monastery that is part of the Meteora monastery complex in Thessaly, central Greece. It is situated at the top of a rocky precipice , 900 meters above the sea level, surrounded by forests and open to the sky. The monastery is under the jurisdiction of Mount Athos.The Monastery of St. Varlaam is named after a monk who reposed on this spot in June 1336, during a great storm. In 1743, an icon of Saint Varlaam was discovered on the spot, under the icon of Saint John the Forerunner. The monastery was established in 1765 by Abbot Ioannina of Karyes.

The distance from the lake to Athens is about 500 km. The lake is a long, narrow basin formed by the river from the Rioni and Xylohronos mountain ranges, which meet at its easternmost point.
