A hidden gem nestled in the heart of Greece
Lake Vouliagmeni, nestled in the heart of Greece, holds a quiet charm. With roots in ancient mythology, it’s been a cherished natural site for generations. According to legend, the lake’s waters were believed to possess a gentle touch of rejuvenation.
Approaching, you’ll notice the subtle rock formations framing this tranquil spot. The calm ambiance and unspoiled beauty create a serene retreat. Each swim becomes a peaceful experience, melting away the outside world. The stories of nymphs and goddesses add to the lake’s allure. Today, Lake Vouliagmeni stands as a reminder of nature’s enduring magic, where visitors can share in its timeless beauty.
From far away, the temple of Poseidon stands, proud remnant of the glory of the 5th century BC. Reported since Homer’s -Odysseia- the end of Sounion peninsula became a place of worship of Poseidon and Athena with temples from the 6th century BC. During the early 5th century BC, the Athenians raised the imposing temple in honor of Poseidon, in the fortress that protected the coast of Attica; its ruins have survived until nowadays.
Lower, northern of the temple of Poseidon the sanctuary of Athena was also built. The decline during the Peloponnesian war, which was intensified during the first century B.C. led to the fall of the sanctuary during the later years, when travelers, including the philhellene English poet Lord Byron visited the place, enchanted by its location, just before the start of the excavations and the discovery of its ruins.
After your visit to Sounio, you will return to Athens along the same coastal road.
