The Parthenon was originally built in the 5
th Century BCE. This incomparable temple was built to
honor the Greek Goddess of Wisdom, Athena, whom the city is named after

Attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors every year, the museum is rapidly becoming as famous
as
the architectural wonders that surround it. Opened to the public in 2009, the museum is home to
an incredible collection of Ancient and Classical Greek artefacts all housed in a state of the art
setting.

The temple took well over 600 years to complete and it stood proudly for approximately 200 years
before time and neglect began to dilapidate the building until it reached its present condition which
nonetheless evokes the temple’s former grandeur.

Although its history is relatively recent compared with the rest of this ancient city, Syntagma Square
has been the central point for all of the major political movements in Athens over the last 200 years

of central importance to Athens, the origins of its name have been
lost to the ages. In fact, the area was not even known as Plaka until the Greek War of Independence
