Athens Trip Overview

Our trip starts from Athens, so get ready for the most unforgettable tour you’ll experience in Greece!
This 2 day tour takes you to some of the most popular highlights of Greece. Along the way I’ll give you a lot of info about history, mythology and culture. We’ll enjoy our visit to Vergina (Ancient Macedonia), and the Royal tombs of Aigai-Vergina. On our way there, we’ll have a couple of stops at Thermopylae and Dion. To save up our energy we’ll spend the night in a charming town called Kalabaka (NOTE accommodation is not included. The accommodation for all, plus the driver’s, must be done by the travelers), where in the evening we’ll have free time for activities etc.
The second day we’ll visit Meteora and Ancient Olympia/the Ancient “Sacred Forrest”. To make this trip even more magical we’ll go on a little hiking to a breathtaking waterfall, where we’ll be able to take a dip in a near by lake. So don’t forget to bring your swimsuits! This tour can be adjusted based on your needs.

What to Expect When Visiting Athens, Attica, Greece

Our trip starts from Athens, so get ready for the most unforgettable tour you’ll experience in Greece!

Itinerary

Day 1: 1) Thermopylae 2) Dion 3) Vergina (Ancient Macedonia) 4) Kalabaka

Stop At: Thermopylae, Thermopylae, Phthiotis Region, Central Greece
We will begin our tour from the city center Athens and we will drive to the first attraction of the day Thermopylae, known for the Battlefield of Thermopylae, where we will visit Thermopylae’s Innovative Center of Historical Information and we will see the Statue of Leonidas.
Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Dion, Dion, Pieria Region, Central Macedonia
Next, we will visit the small town of Dion. In ancient times this site used to be a place of worship of Zeus, the king of the gods of Mount Olympus, therefore it is known as “the town of Zeus”.
In Dion there are various sanctuaries, such as the Temple of the goddess Demeter (the oldest Macedonian temple) and the Temple of goddess Isis and the Hellenistic theater, in which the Olympia nude games used to be held but now it is often used during the summer for performances of the Olympus Festival.

Stop At: Vergina, Vergina, Imathia Region, Central Macedonia
The last attraction of the day will be in the small town of Vergina. Vergina is best known as the site of ancient Aigai, this town is considered as one of the most important archaeological discovery in all times, as it is the royal and first capital of Macedon. This ancient town was always a sight of interest for the archaeologists because according to ancient sources Aigai is described as one of the richest cities in the ancient world and a great spiritual center. The ancient site was discovered in 1976 and excavated under the leadership of archaeologist Manolis Andronikos. The excavation unearthed the burial sites of many kings of Macedon, including the tomb of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great, which, unlike so many other tombs, had not been disturbed or looted. It is also the site of an extensive royal palace. The archaeological museum of Vergina was built to house all the artifacts found at the site and is one of the most important museums in Greece.

To end the first day of our tour we will stop and stay overnight in Kalabaka. A small town built at the foothills of the rocks of Meteora, filled with rich history and important monuments.

Day 2: 1) Meteora 2) Ancient Olympia 3) Corinth Canal

Stop At: Meteora, Meteora, Trikala Region, Thessaly
We will begin the second day of our tour, early in the morning, in Meteora. Let us explore and wonder together the magnificent geological phenomenon in Meteora that will surely enchant you. It is well-known for the monasteries built on top of 1000 feet of immense natural pillars and hill-like rounded boulders and it is widely visited every year to admire its beauty. You will see how the monks of Meteora live these monasteries, what are their habits and customs. You will learn how so many monasteries were built so high and on rocks, which seems like a real miracle. We will visit lots of monasteries, such as the Holy Monastery of Varlaam, Rousanou and the Holy Trinity.

Stop At: Archaeological Site of Olympia, Archea Olympia, Olympia 27065 Greece
Olympia is a small town in Elis on the Peloponnese peninsula in Greece, famous for the nearby archaeological site of the same name, which was a major Panhellenic religious sanctuary of ancient Greece, where the ancient Olympic Games were held. The site was primarily dedicated to Zeus and drew visitors from all over the Greek world as one of a group of such “Panhellenic” centres which helped to build the identity of the ancient Greeks as a nation. Despite the name, it is nowhere near Mount Olympus in northern Greece, where the Twelve Olympians, the major deities of Ancient Greek religion, were believed to live. We will also visit a secret refuge in the area. But to make the most out of this incredible tour we will go on a little hike to see a waterfall, a hidden treasure, near ancient Olympia. So do not forget to bring your swimsuits to take a dip in the lake near the waterfall, in a summery day.

Stop At: Corinth Canal, Isthmia, Loutraki 201 00 Greece
The last attraction of this amazing tour will be in Corinth to visit the Corinth Canal and then for our final stop we will be heading back to Athens.
