Athens Trip Overview

Our trip starts from Athens.

On this amazing full day tour you will see the most beautiful sights and scenery. On our way I will give you a lot of information about history, mythology and culture.

We will enjoy a visit to Delphi, novel of the world and the religious sites of Meteora. Also, we will pass by Thermopylae, where the 300 Spartans fought and the breathtaking Arachova.We’ll spend the night in Delphi (accomodation is not included. The accomodation for all, plus the driver’s, must be done by the travellers), where in the evening we’ll have free time for activities etc.

The second day we will explore the west side of Greece and we will go to Ancient Plevrona and Oiniades, two of the most historical places in Greece. We will combine this trip with the religion, so we are going to visit the great Monastery of Ligovitsi. Our final destination will be Messolonghi town and its castle, before our return in Athens

Itinerary

Day 1: Athens-Thermopylae,Meteora,Delfoi,Arachova,Distomo and a romantic night stay at Delphi

Stop At: Battlefield of Thermopylae, Thermopylae Greece
Our trip will start from Athens and then we will drive to Thermopylae, where we will visit Thermopylae’s Innovative Centre of Historical Information and we will see the Statue of Leonidas.
Duration: 20 minutes

Stop At: Roussanou Monastery, Kalambaka Greece
Afterwards we will drive to the breathtaking Meteora, where we will visit a lot of monasteries, built on top of 1000 foot rocks, such as the Holy Monastery of Varlaam, Rousanou and the Holy Trinity.

Stop At: Delphi Greece
After a wonderful scenic drive through mountains and fertile valleys we reach Delphi, located under the 3000ft tall mountain Parnassos. There we will visit the Archaeological museum of Delphi, we will see the Archaeological site of Delphi and the site of the temple of Apollo.
Duration: 2 hours

Stop At: Arachova, Arachova, Boeotia Region, Central Greece
Then we will take a break for a coffee at Arachova. Driving through the beautiful stone villages of Arachova where we’ll be able to stop so that you can take photos and buy souvenirs.

Stop At: Distomo Massacre Memorial, Distomo Greece
On June 10, 1944, for over two hours, Waffen-SS troops of the 2nd company, I/7 battalion, 4th SS Polizei Panzergrenadier Division under the command of SS-Hauptsturmführer Fritz Lautenbach went door to door and massacred Greek civilians as part of “savage reprisals” for a partisan attack upon the unit’s convoy. A total of 214 men, women and children were killed in Distomo, a small village near Delphi. According to survivors, SS forces “bayoneted babies in their cribs, stabbed pregnant women, and beheaded the village priest.

Day 2: Ancient Plevrona,Oiniades,Messolonghi,Monastery of Ligovitsi-Athens

Stop At: Ancient Plevrona, Mesologgi 302 00, Greece
The second day we will head to Ancient Plevrona. There our visitors, will have the opportunity to come face to face with the wild beauty the place offers. Ancient Plevrona has proved its existence and development during the Mycenaean period. It had taken part in the war of Troy, sending 40 ships. The old town was destroyed in 233 B.C by Demetrius II and was rebuild in the new area that is open to public.

In this impressive archaeological site you will have the chance to see a huge, natural 6-meters tall stone tank, part of the market, the ancient road and a wonderful ancient theatre with the great panoramic view of the sea on west of Messolonghi. A special characteristic of the theatre is the fact that it is built next to the wall and uses a tower for its needs.

Stop At: Oiniades, Greece
Ancient Oiniades was a port town on the west bank of the river Achelous. The town was characterized as one of the most important of Ancient Acarnania(it is now known as Aitoloacarnania).

It was an important port on the route to Corfu. It changed its alliances repeatedly in the course of history; at first it was a member of the Peloponnesian League, but in 424 BC it was incorporated in the Delian League. In the Hellenistic period, Oiniades allied with the Aetolians until 218 BC when Philip V declared it free. From 211-189 BC during the Roman-Macedonian wars the city was again under Aetolian control. In Roman times it lost its strategic importance. However it was still inhabited in the 3rd century AD judging from coin finds.

Stop At: Ligovitsiou, Agrinio 301 31, Greece
Above Lake Ozero or Galitzas, on a hill lying to the east of the hill where the ruins of the Ancient Fortress of the divers are preserved, the monastery of Ligovitsi is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Its external form is fortuitous. In the center is placed the Katholikon belonging to the type of the three-aisled inscribed cruciform with a dome. The three aisles are housed under a common pitched roof, interrupted by another transverse. At the meeting point of the crosses of the Cross, an octagonal dome rises. Along the sides of the wall there is built a number of cells with a hollow roof. The front of the semicircular tower on the northeastern wall of the Catholic, the wall is marked by the date 1737, which proves the rich history of the monastery.

We are going to visit the town of Messolongion and its castle. There, you’ll be able to learn about the heroic Exodus of Messolonghi against Ottomans that costs the lives of many Greeks but it remained a reference point for the subsequent struggle for independence.
