Those short on time and looking to escape the crowds will appreciate this sophisticated, romantic side of the island, with a nature hike, a swim in a cool pond below the waterfall, an excursion that also visits a small picturesque fishing village, and an ancient olive tree.

the beautiful waterfall Richtis with a height exceeding 20 meters and the small pond formed below it (richtis means waterfall in the Cretan dialect). The waterfall has water even in summer and is a great place to have a refreshing dive. The path ends in the beautiful pebbly beach of Richtis. The beach has a small park with tamarisk trees, with stone seats and tables around it, and a water fountain with potable water.

Along the coastal road of the village, there are a few taverns and cafes where you can enjoy fresh seafood and your drinks; these taverns are famous even to Greek celebrities. There was an old tax office next to the taverns, which was unfortunately demolished several years ago. In front of the small village, you will find the small beach of Mochlos that is sandy and has rocky bottom. Next to it there are the basic amenities, but still it is not organized. If you head to the east, you will find the second bay of the village, which is smaller and rockier.
At mochlos you will have plenty of time for a swim as well as for lunch

The olive tree has been declared by the Association of Cretan Olive Municipalities as a natural monument because of the large size of its trunk and because of its location near the three ancient settlements Vrondas, Kastro and Azorias, where several artifacts related to olive oil processing have been revealed by the archaeologists. The maximum diameter of the trunk is 4.9m and the circumference is 14.20 m. Based on the method of annual rings, it is estimated that the tree was planted in the period 1350-1100BC!

In 2004 the municipality of Ierapetra, where it belongs, suggested that the first winner of the Women’s Marathon at the Olympic Games in Athens 2004 would be wreathed by a branch (cotinos) if the wild root stock of Azorias tree. Indeed, the olive branch was cut at a special ceremony and used in the women’s marathon.
