Itinerary

Stop At: Karavas, Karavas, Kythira, Attica

Our tour will start from the village of Karavas. We will make a short stop to take photos and visit the village’s small, yet famous bakery. The village of Karavas is located in the northern part of the island, a few kilometers from Potamos, the largest of Kythera’s villages. It is close to a large ravine where all sorts of trees cover fresh water springs flowing from the hills. Most famous among the very many springs are those of Amir Ali, Keramari, Maggana and Portokalia. According to the legend, the latter owes its name to an orange tree on which grew 100,000 oranges. The tree withered some decades ago due to a severe winter.

The inhabitants of Karavas are very active. Portokalia (“the orange tree”), a local association, holds an annual fun fair with traditional dances and sports activities. The Patrician School of Agriculture, the primary school as well as the arch that signals the entrance of the village, were all made possible thanks to donations from the inhabitants.

Stop At: Mitata, Mitata, Kythira, Attica

The most beautiful –in terms of lush vegetation – village of Kythera. Located centrally in the north of the island and near the airport, it has wonderful view to a beautiful glen, the gorge of Tsakonas. Opposite Mitata is the smaller village of Viaradika and among them lies the gorge of Tsakonas, a frenzy of dense vegetation with various trees, shrubs and other plants that capture the senses. The gorge is accessible and full of pleasant surprises for the potential walker who will encounter watermills, ponds, a small post-Byzantine church and the secret school. The region has plenty of springs with abundant water. The unique variety of nectarine, also known under the name “breasts of Aphrodite”, grows in Mitata. The locals are mainly occupied in agricultural work. They are among the most active people on the island and their association named “Myrtia” organizes the “Wine Festival” each August. Don’t miss a visit at the springs, an area suitable for a picnic.

Stop At: Avlemonas, Avlemonas, Kythira, Attica

After we leave Mitata, we will continue on to the lovely, picturesque fishing village of Avlemonas. Located on the eastern edge of the island, Avlemonas is perhaps Kythira’s most traditional and best preserved village. Due to the village’s dry climate and architecture, it will feel more like we are somewhere in the Cyclades! In Avlemonas, we suggest that you take a stroll to the fisherman’s port where you will see the “Cavallini Mansion” with the sundial, take a photo at the “vardiola” above the small pier and, of course, walk along the paved path to the small Fortress. There will be plenty of time to swim in the clean water of the village’s small bay, enjoy a coffee at one of the local cafés, or try the freshly caught seafood in one of the restaurants.
